Biography
Dani Marsh graduated from London College of Fashion with a first in BA (Hons) Fashion Illustration, a love for animation and plenty of enthusiasm for creating stories and characters. With a love of creating quirky portraiture and heartfelt stories. She was selected for Aesthetica Film Festival 2019.
Director's Statement
Photographer Catherine Opie’s subjects illustrate her words through movement and transformation as the tattoos on their bodies come alive and form the next character, showing the deeper critical thinking of the artist.
In researching Catherine Opie and why she started working as a photographer and why her work focuses on under-represented communities, I found that she wishes to reach out with her work and connect to people with non-conforming identities, and to see her work and feel part of a community where they will be accepted. I think this is an admirable goal of artwork and one I also wish to carry through in my film.
I have chosen to title my animation ‘Critical Creativity’ from a quote of Opie’s from the audio clip. My style has a very illustrative analogue look while still using digital media, which was another great connection to Opie who says that she uses a digital camera like a film one in a similar way. The work draws its palette from the bright jewel colours that Opie uses as backdrops in her portraits. The film depicts a cast of some of her iconic portrait subjects transforming into each other through their tattoos. The tattoos are representative of the surface identity of the subject, and the movement of them shows the deeper creative thinking of Opie.
