Biography
Yiqing (Delsin) Huang is an animator who graduated from London College of Communication. With a minimalistic style, and abstract representations of stories, she loves exploring the connections between lines and simple shapes.
Director statement
Otobong Nkanga first grabbed my eyes with her huge installation artworks. These artworks were simple yet when you look close enough, they held a lot of meanings and ideas behind. She tells stories of the earth, as well as her cultural background and histories of her country through these installations and performance art. She likes to work with different natural components, such as soils, crystals and stones. The central idea behind her works are the connections between the nature and the human body. Exploring how it could affect our life, and how we balance the relationship of us and the landscape.
I chose her voice clip to work on not only because of the style, but I was also curious about the link of the nature and me. I particularly like the installation called Crumbling Through the Powdery Air. I’ve decided to draw something similar to this particular piece of art in my film. However, the main narrative of the film is still driven by the voice, where she talks about the performance and movements in her works. I chose to work on the minimal and abstract style, so it’s not distracting the audience away from the recording, but to lead them to understand. The background music was a piece of vivid, soft and slow piano melody, which suits her voice, and supports her words. There’s no dramatic climax in the narrative therefore, I think it’s most suitable. What was difficult to achieve was the presentation of an abstract idea. I hope to improve my imaginations and skills on it for later projects.
