Biography: UK born, coming from a creative upbringing, studying photography, graphic design and fine art in A-levels, then went on to do a foundation diploma at Farnham UCA, discovering an interest in freelance animation, I then went to study a BA Hons in Animation Production at Arts University of Bournemouth to learn and experiment with different practices of animation techniques and principles as well as the pipeline of industry standard animation, now studying an MA in Animation to specialize and hone my craft further for a potential freelance career.
Director statement: This was a collaboration between the students of MA Animation at UAL and Tate Gallery with Susan Doyon and Elizabeth Robert. Moses and I chose to work on a Paula Rego audio clip because she was an artist we were most familiar with, my interpretation of the audio clip was her explaining the difference between creatures and people in her artwork and how they can influence the dynamic of the piece. The idea behind the film was to visualize her work coming alive as she draws animal creatures in her composition, and as before things could get more chaotic she puts her foot down and keeps the animals tamed and under her control by orchestrating them with a person in her composition. The technique of the film was 2D digital drawing, the animation was aimed to be realistic with weight and form with believable character performance in the animals. The style was intended to give a sketchy, pen & ink drawn look to be relevant to Paula Rego’s story tale print illustrations which contain tropes of animals and people together in the same composition. -because her prints could be considered creepy and dark, I made the creative decision to use sound and music to create an ambient soundscape but also to make it believable and entertaining to watch along with the animation. This project for me, probably defined a new way of looking at a piece of work by thinking about the relationship dynamic between multiple subject matters; be that an animal or a human being. The most important thing to me on this project was to create an understandable clear storyboard to communicate the artist’s words with clarity in the medium of moving image. I was trying to achieve a high-quality final product for a client with clear storytelling of an interpretation of a prolific artist’s words through visual motifs and metaphors.
